General information

The station operates five platforms, of which two are in fact SKM stops. The remaining three operate Przewozy Regionalne and PKP Intercity trains. Access to platforms is made available via subterranean passages, both from the east and west sides of the city. At the east side the passage ends on the other side of Podwale Grodzkie street, and on the west it goes directly into a PKS (long-distance bus) station. The passages enable access to the station building and tram stops; inside them, many facilities are located, including but not limited to: shops, fast food bars and press outlets. One can also find individual vendors selling their products directly from their hands.

Station building

The station building hails from the end of the 19th century. Nowadays there is a small shopping centre on the patio, a McDonald's restaurant and a few other fast food (like KFC) outlets inside the building. Ticket offices are open all day, and the station sells international traffic tickets.

History

Before the outbreak of World War II Gdańsk Główny station was named Danzig Hbf. At the end of the World War II Soviet forces burned the station building almost completely (as they did with the rest of the city), and it had to be rebuilt after the war.

The same design was used in the construction of Colmar's principle train station in Alsace, France. Thus the buildings are twins of one another.
